About Mercedes-Benz 400SE

Belonging to the Mercedes-Benz W140, which is a series of flagship vehicles that were manufactured by the German automotive company Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Benz 400SE was built by the Daimler-Benz between 1991 and 1992 as a full-size luxury car. Originally introduced as a model of the W140 lineup, which is also known as the third-generation S-Class, 400SE was only available for one model year before being discontinued and replaced by the 400SEL for the 1993 model year.
Mercedes-Benz 400SE (W140) made its debut at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show in March for the 1992 model year when the S-Class was in its third generation. It was offered in only one body style, 4-door sedan and came in only one trim level. "SE" in its name stands for S-Klasse-Einspritzmotor and it had a standard wheelbase. 400SE introduced many innovations and it had double-pane window glazing, power-assisted closing for doors and trunk lid, electric windows which lowered back down upon encountering an obstruction, rear-parking markers which rose from the rear wings (replaced with sonar-assisted packing later), a heating system, optional air suspension, a rear hydropneumatic suspension, optional Electronic Stability Control, option fixture, Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR) traction control, front axle wishbone suspension, rear independent multi-link suspension, ADS (Adaptive Damping System) (Skyhook-type suspension), electrically-operated automatic-dimming inside rear-view mirror, dual-zone climate control and many others. During its whole life, 400SE had been powered by a 4.2 L V8 rated at 282 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque and power was sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed 5G-Tronic automatic transmission.

Mercedes-Benz 400SE Common Problems & Maintenance Tips

Offering many state-of-the-art technology and safety features, excellent build quality and quiet cabin, Mercedes-Benz 400SE could be a wonderful choice as a mid-size luxury car. However, now the at least twenty-four-year-old 400SE must suffer from these common problems if it is still available:
First, for a model with such an age like Mercedes-Benz 400SE, the engine failure is the unavoidable problem. But the worse situation is the cooling system failure also comes along. It is well-known for drivers that once the engine has something wrong, the vehicle also borders on breaking down, while the cooling system failure only deteriorates and speed up the engine failure. In order to avoid the worst situation, experienced 400SE drivers offered these signs. If you see leaking coolants or oil on the ground; if the engine keeps overheating and stays at a high operating temperature; if the engine starts to misfire, stall or have starting issues; if the vehicle loses power when acceleration and suffer from poor gas mileage; and if the Low Coolant Light and Check Engine Light come on together, then you need to make sure if the 400SE water pump, intake manifold gasket, fuel pump, coolant reservoir, cooling hose, oil filter, air filter, engine control module and valve cover gasket are working properly or not.
Second, another horrible problem on Mercedes-Benz 400SE is the suspension failure. This problem is not well-known as the above one, so many 400SE drivers tend to lose the best chance to get it solved before it causes fatal accidents. Professional repairmen warn that if you could hear clunking or grinding noises from underneath the vehicle, you need to keep alert. These noises are the culprits of uneven and excessive tire wear, which results in tilting vehicle. If you turn a deaf ear to them, you will end up with poor handling of the vehicle due to intense car vibration, tilting vehicle, unintentional steering and poorly operated steering wheel. Thus, please keep the 400SE wheel bearing, shock absorber, sway bar bushing, control arm bushing, coil springs, air suspension and coil spring insulator in the prime condition all the time.
However, you still need to spare extra efforts in routine maintenance on vulnerable auto parts of your Mercedes-Benz 400SE in hope of a perfect ride. Some parts including 400SE seat belt, windshield wiper, wiper blade, antenna, cabin air filter, fog light and headlight are essential for a safe and comfortable driving environment, but they are also exposed to harsh working conditions, maintaining them routinely is your indispensable job.
When it comes to choosing parts replacements for your Mercedes-Benz 400SE, please go for OEM Mercedes-Benz 400SE auto parts without hesitation. MBPartsPrime.com offers manufacturer-warranted genuine Mercedes-Benz 400SE auto parts at the lowest price online.
